What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive process of penetrating the skin with controlled micro-injuries to activate the skin's natural healing response.

How does Microneedling work?

In order to perform a microneedling treatment, a microneedling device is needed. (This is the wand which performs microneedling magic.)

This device is basically a pen with a bunch of tiny needles that is rubbed across the surface of the skin to penetrate it and intentionally create micro-injuries.

As the body heals from these controlled injuries, the skin's natural restorative and rejuvenating abilities are activated– leading to healthy and youthful appearing skin. This is because the essential proteins, collagen and elastin, are produced during the skin's healing process.

Microneedling naturally activates the body’s ability to produce collagen, making it an excellent alternative to more invasive and surgical treatment options.

The science of microneedling

Microneedling essentially creates directed mini wounds in the skin, relying on the science of wound healing to restore and rejuvenate the skin.

So to understand how the magic of microneedling works, we must understand the process of wound healing.

There are three main stages of wound repair: inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling.

1. Inflammation

When the microneedles pierce your skin, it activates your immune response to cleanse the wound and remove the debris.

2. Proliferation
During this second stage, the wound is rebuilt and a new network of blood vessels is developed.

3. Remodeling

Is microneedling safe?

Yes, microneedling is safe– but only when performed appropriately.

There are a few important factors to consider to ensure your treatment is safe, suitable, and successful- so be sure to inquire about the following:

● Are they considering whether I have any contraindications?

This treatment is only safe when it is suitable! Your professional should evaluate your skin's health and medical history to consider whether you have any contraindications to microneedling.

This should be determined during your consultation session.
If you’re considering the treatment, be mindful on whether you have a risk of treatment by going

over the following contraindications (provided by SkinPen®):

• Active skin cancer in the treatment area
• Open wounds, sores, or irritated skin in the treatment area
• Allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics
• Hemorrhagic (bleeding) disorder or hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction Pregnant or nursing
• Currently taking drugs with the ingredient isotretinoin

● What device are they using?
Ask your Med Spa which device they use for microneedling.

What does microneedling treat? Does it produce results?

Does Microneedling hurt?

Microneedling doesn’t hurt, though it may cause slight discomfort for some.

I know, I know, a bunch of needles penetrating the skin sounds like it can’t not be painful. But trust me, it sounds more painful than it actually is.

You can rest assured that microneedling only produces a mild sensation, especially when performed with the SkinPen® device- with most people reporting that they can only feel the vibration of the device against their skin during the procedure.

Your medical skin care professional should apply a topical anesthetic (fancypants word for numbing cream) to the treatment area before your procedure– which will significantly increase the comfort of your experience.

After your microneedling treatment, your professional should provide you with soothing aftercare and a post-treatment procedure plan.

How long does it take?

Like we said, microneedling is magic. It just takes a quick bippity, boppity, boo.

It is a very short procedure, normally taking only 30 minutes per session. But of course, it would vary by the individual and their desired results.

How many sessions are needed?

You can do only one microneedling session and still see results for half a year to come.

However, three sessions is usually ideal– yielding the most effective and lasting results of vibrant, radiant skin.

However, if you’re being treated for a certain condition like scarring, discoloration, or wrinkles– it can vary as your medical skin care provider would determine a suitable treatment plan to effectively resolve the condition and achieve your desired results.

Are there any side effects?

The only side effect is that you might just look like a tomato for a little while.

There is little to no downtime for this treatment, however you will experience a bit of redness in the skin similar to mild to moderate sunburn.

This will go away within a day or two, and by the third day you will be left with glowing and renewed skin.

The other symptoms people experience are minimal including dryness/roughness, peeling, tenderness, itching, or slight burning– but these are resolved with time without complication.
