All About Laser Hair Removal!

By: Our Team

Do you ever get annoyed at how much time, energy, and maintenance keeping up with hair removal requires? It’s high time that you learn about laser hair removal, my friend.

Traditional hair removal like shaving, waxing, and hair removal creams provide very temporary results– requiring a lot of maintenance in the long run.

Not to mention the inevitable pitfalls of these treatments like cutting yourself while shaving, and the excruciating pain of a wax (ouch!)

Do not even get me started on those irritating, messy hair creams. (I mean, why do they smell so weird?)

Laser hair removal is the QUEEN of all hair removal treatments. Unlike other treatments-- it’s long lasting, timely, and highly effective in permanently reducing hair growth.

But what exactly is laser hair removal? How does it work, and why is it so effective?

You’ve come to the right place to ask, we got you. The following answers these questions and any others you may have about laser hair removal!

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a treatment that targets and destroys the hair follicle. This results in permanent hair growth reduction.

How does it work?

Many of us know about laser hair removal, but we don’t know what the laser actually is.

A laser is a wavelength of light. This laser passes through the skin to target and penetrate the hair follicle.

When the light of the laser is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) at the hair follicle, the hair follicle destroys itself.

Laser hair removal targets and diminishes the actual hair follicle– making it the lasting and effective choice when compared with alternative methods that keep it intact.

Laser hair removal is most effective when the hair is in its anagen, or growth, stage. Only 30% of our hair is at this stage at any given time, so that’s why multiple treatments are needed instead of just one.

Why not just shave, wax, or use hair removal cream? What’s so special about laser hair removal?

When compared with other hair removal methods, like I said, laser hair removal is queen.

The thing about laser hair removal that sets it apart from other methods is that it targets and destroys the hair at the root while other methods only remove hair from the surface.

Shaving simply trims the hair down below the skin's surface. It basically hides your hair under your skin, but still the hair is intact in the follicle below the skin– ready for new growth.

Hair removal creams just weaken the hair at the follicle- and like shaving, these creams keep the hair intact in the follicle for new growth.

And while plucking, threading and waxing may pull the hair out of the hair follicle, they still keep the follicle intact for new growth.

Laser hair removal penetrates deeper than any of these surface-level treatments by effectively diminishing the very hair follicle itself.

It gets to the root of the hair growth and stops it there. Therefore, it is a much more lasting and effective treatment than any hair removal alternatives.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Laser hair removal causes slight discomfort. The sensation is often compared to rubber bands snapping on the skin. And the more sensitive the area, the greater the discomfort may be.

However, alternative hair removal methods like waxing are far more painful (and frequent) than lasers.

Plus, here at Hidden Oasis, we use Venus Velocity™ laser technology that comes equipped with a built-in cooling system. This cooling system reduces the discomfort you feel during your session, and our laser professionals happily adjust the settings to your liking.

How long does a treatment take?

Laser hair removal is timely and effective as the laser can cover large surface areas at a time.

The amount of time a session takes depends on the size of the treatment area. For example, an upper lip treatment would be a lot quicker than the legs.

One of the best things about laser hair removal is how short the sessions are. They are normally short enough to fit into a lunch break!

Additionally, there is no downtime or recovery period- so you can get back to your regular schedule as soon as your short session is over.

How many sessions are there?

Your treatment will be especially customized for your individual treatment area, skin type, hair color, and desired results. So it would definitely vary by case– but normally, a handful or two of sessions.

Most people generally receive anywhere between four to ten treatment sessions total.

(You can schedule a complimentary consultation with Hidden Oasis Med Spa in San Antonio to discuss a laser hair removal treatment plan suitable for you with one of our professionals.)

How often are these sessions?

Laser hair removal treatments are usually done with a gap of four to eight weeks between sessions. That is to say that you only need to pop into the med spa once every couple of months to effectively reduce your hair growth.
